  • Great Rain! Summer thunderstorms

I've heard that we got as much rain during the last week as all of the rain received during the 2007 season. I hope that your yards and landscaping have perked up due to the rain, it's great to see the lake levels going up too. Although the humidity has not been very pleasant, let's hope for more rain!

Wasn't the word "monsoon" supposed to be dropped? I thought I read that last year on Azcentral.com. I believe the summer storms are supposed to be referred to simply as "thunderstorms."

  • The heat is on - it must be summer in Arizona

Perhaps it's time to start tracking the number of "excessive heat warnings" we receive this summer. Let's start hoping the summer thunderstorms arrive to bring us some relief. Does anyone know the date of the last official measurable rain in Phoenix? Looking back it's hard to believe that we had as much rain as we did last winter.

Last year we set a record for the number days with the temperature at 110 degrees and above, 32, I believe. I think it's easily to say that the "average" daily temperatures are rising and I'm hoping that 115 degrees does not become a normal high in the next decade.

  • Great new posts and photos by Dragon - thanks!

Dragon. These are great pictures and I want to spend some time reviewing them. I will respond to your various posts soon. I'm quite interested in some of the various things you have done and did go to your Yahoo website.

I hope Dragon can provide some inspiration to other members and new members to get involved in Arizona gardening and ArizonaGardeners.net. I have almost shut down this web site due to lack of interest by the community.

We have solid search results for Arizona gardening on Google and I truly wish I could get some folks from the Dave's Garden web site over here, right in Arizona.

Dragon please get your friends involved and have them upload pictures and write content! Would you be interested in your blog about your garden? If so I can give you front page access. If you're interested please either create a post or send me a personal email - david@vphx.net

    Thanks! [Utah Jones - admin]

  • Backyard gardens - more people are growing their own food

Here are some great examples of how to help fight food costs. Sales of seeds are taking off and gardening classes filling up. During World War II truck gardens produced 40 percent of the nation's produce, allowing farmers to grow food for the troops. See the article at Azcentral.com

  • How to protect your plants from freezing

Article from Azcentral.com - 12/27/2007 - Cold-sensitive plants such as petunia, begonia, lobelia, impatiens, coleus, Ficus nitida, poinsettia, bougainvillea, hibiscus, plumeria and lantana, water night before expected frost. Valerie Meyers, a National Weather Service meteorologist, said to expect near or freezing conditions in the desert at least through Friday morning, thanks to clear skies, light winds and extremely dry air.

  • We need pictures!

I wish some of our new members and new members-to-be would upload some pictures of their landscaping and yards. How about some seasonal pictures, winter flowers, landscaped yards with holiday lights? How about your prized plants? Come on people, don't be shy! Show off your hard work and what your hard-earned money has bought!
  • Amazing Rain - I hope you're enjoying it!

It seems it will not stop raining in Arizona and boy do we need it! We got 2 inches last weekend and more is on the way. When it rains it pours! California is expecting 3 inches this weekend too. Seattle is underwater and the East Coast battered with snow and ice. Welcome winter!

  • ArizonaGardeners.net is on a roll - we've got new members!

We've got a minimum of 2 new members in the last month which is putting quite a strain on the system. Slow down people! We can only sign you up so fast. I know the demand is great!

All kidding aside. I am still truly hoping that someday ArizonaGardeners.net will actually become an active online community. There are a lot of possibilities for the site. Forget GardenWeb and Dave's Garden. Why belong to a site that's in Texas or back east? Why not have an active Arizona gardening community right here at home.

We're looking for a variety of writers: members that would like to write instructional, informative content and also writers that would simply like to share their gardening experiences through stories. We're looking for fun and joy related our incredible earth:  plants, pictures, poems and song.

Interested? Become a member and send a private message to Utah Jones, Dave, the developer of ArizonaGardeners.net

There's so many great things we can start to do here. I'm constantly looking for new and enhanced content management features and informational resources. The Wikipedia features were recently tested. In addition we would like to add a variety of new features so we can begin to develop our own, Arizona specific content. Other ideas are chat capabilities, glossary etc. Please send us your ideas.

The platform we're using is powerful and is based on Community Server. We've got industrial strength capabilities "under the hood" here. The sky is the limit. Microsoft uses Community Server for a variety of community collaboration sites for their own company.
  • Summer is here

Summer is here. Does anyone have any fun activities planned or activities they would like to share. I believe that the Desert Botantical Gardens has summer evening walks scheduled and the zoo has extended evening hours. Please post any other great summer gardening activities at ArizonaGardeners.net.
  • Spring is here - happy Easter!

Wishing everyone a happy Easter. I hope most of your plants, trees and shrubs were able to survive our cold winter. I've seen a great number of trees making a comeback. Please be sure to join ArizonaGardeners.net so we can share stories. I'm posting some pictures of our flowering cactus and annuals. Thanks, Utah
  • Nursery owners expect a shortage of plants this spring

Everyone is awaiting spring and we want to replace our frost damaged plants. Due to the great demand, a shortage of plants is expected at the retailers.

  • Snow in the valley!

Snow in the valley! Azcentral.com has some interesting pictures of snow in Mesa and 56th Street and Thomas Road. Also, some great pictures of people making snowmen in Tucson. Boy! what a winter, this is coldest winter I've ever experienced in Phoenix since 1993.

We lost a great number of plants and and have basically given up on trying to save any more. Spring should be around the corner - but wait - how's February going to be?
